Yada Yada Yada / The Drawing Room / Some thoughts on the future of Molland's |

Fear not, the board will be around! However, I will be implementing some changes over the next few weeks. The first and most important is a change of address. I have been desirous of moving Tilneys and Trap-doors (for those who don't know it, that's my personal website) to a host that allows cgi scripts. I have always used Bravenet, and their services are fine, but the ads are getting out of control, so I wanted to use my own scripts. Since the hosts that I am interested in allow 5-6 gig of bandwidth per month, and T&T and Molland's together use less than one gig, it seemed silly to pay for two sites when one will do nicely. So I thought I would move the boards over to T&T. This will not be happening for a week or two (I think) and I will make sure to let everyone know well in advance. The domain for mollands.net expires in May so it will probably be sometime around the third or fourth week of this month. I have been looking into YaBB SE, which is the PHP/MySQL version of YaBB (this one is Perl/CGI). The difference is how the files are delivered and stored. SE uses a lot less server resources, which is always desirable, though I sincerely doubt that this board will ever use up to the limit of bandwidth. However, if a lot of people happen to visit at once, the current version places a large load on the server, which is shared with many other sites. That is a circumstance that tends to cheese off webhosts, and one I wish to avoid. I have to do some more investigating to see how the new one works. They've got so many bugs worked out of this current version that I'm a little leery--but from what I've read, the new version is quite up to speed. It might be easier to do that during the move. I understand that they have a converter from this type of board to the new one, so I think all the posts, member files, etc. will copy over. At least I hope so. And always assuming I don't screw it up. So if anyone wants to wait to register here until after the move, I don't blame you (remember, guest posting is allowed, at least for now). However, keep in mind that if I lose your file or something goes wrong, it's lost forever--you're not getting put on any junk mail lists or anything. I am the only one with access to them. < drunk with power!> As far as the look of the forums, I will be abandoning the different-look-for-each-forum thing. I haven't worked out anything definite yet, but had in mind dark hunter/tealy green, light gray, and white, a nice clean layout, something along the lines of the Jane Austen e-texts on T&T. The text will probably be black or very dark gray, however, for ease of reading. I will also remove the direct links to the forums from T&T and just have a general link to Molland's on the splash page. This will also tie in to my wish to overhaul T&T somewhat and make it less of a strictly Jane Austen site and more my personal homepage, reflecting all of my interests (though it will probably always be mostly Jane). You'll see as it develops. Molland's will be part of T&T, but a separate entity within it. Sort of like how I did the Cult of Da Man site. You may have noticed that I didn't restore all the old forums. That's because some of the forums simply didn't attract many posts. If somebody wants to make a case to have a certain forum restored, go right ahead! I'll always listen. This is all part of my desire to simplify the forum. I did receive a couple of comments from users saying that there were too many forums to check--so I streamlined it a bit. I was really touched by all the e-mails and things I received when the site was down last week. I'm pleased that all of you enjoy this forum as much as I do, and I hope you will all continue to visit with the changes. I always like to hear constructive criticism, so please speak up if you have any ideas, or disagree with any of mine. If you're not comfortable with doing it publicly, feel free to e-mail me (it's in my profile) or send me a private message. I want the forum members to have a good experience here--otherwise, I'm just talking to myself (not that that's ever stopped me ) Hmmm, I need more smilies. I think I'll design some of my own, actually. Thanks for listening! And do let me know if you have any questions, problems, ideas, etc. ~Mags 8-} |

They are appreciated! I was a little bummed at first but in the great scheme of things, a message board is not that important, is it? The important thing was to get it up and running again...I just hope that nobody lost any words of wisdom they wished to commit to posterity. A word to the wise--maintain your own backup. Mags 8-} |
