My first post at last at Mollands, and it is with this. My countryfellow will direct the prequels. This is exciting. I think he is the right man to do it, since PJ is unavailable for the job.

This is great news!  I did enjoy Mimic and Blade 2 and Hellboy, so much that it has made me a great fan of his, though up until now I didn't know he was the director of these films. Mimic was scary, Blade 2 was a thrill, and Hellboy was...it was a love story after all. I love stories like that.  Hobbit will be great. Hobbits and Dwarfs, Elves and Wizards...and Trolls!

I love del Toro so I have high hopes, but the following quote gives me pause:

Quote
I was never into heroic fantasy. At all. I don't like little guys and dragons, hairy feet, hobbits -- I've never been into that at all. I don't like sword and sorcery, I hate all that stuff.

-- from Salon audiophile conversation with del Toro.

Maybe he'll take the Andrew Davies route and "improve" it with the sex scenes the author surely had in mind but was too timid to put in the book.

Nah.  That's not Guillermo's style.  Bilbo will be a peasant during the the Spanish civil war who imagines the idyllic Shire to escape the harsh realities of his world.   Wink

I've heard one cannot tell apart guy and girl dwarfs - it's the beard, you know. That's what I'd like to see, to decide for myself. And of course, I want to see the Bilbo's pantry. I always judge a movie great by the food they served. Bacon and eggs, cheese, apples, hot loaves of bread, baked potatoes, and lots of greens. And port! we must have wine, and lagers of beer and singing dwarfs, or is it dwarves! I never remember. I am perpetually hungry, and sometimes I got to find a way to eat, even if it's only on screen. And then I can dance like there's no tomorrow.

Let's not talk about Smaug - I am prone to excitement. And talking birds and treasure. And the ring...
